The differences between two generations of artists
“Art on the River” (“Kunst am Strom”) brings together artists and curators from the Danube region. The project aims at presenting various artistic positions from the Danube countries, which will be shown in a travelling ex- hibition in 2020 and 2021. What’s more, artists and curators will meet and exchange ideas repeated- ly at symposia and especially during the preparations for the two European Capitals of Culture, Novi Sad 2022 and Timisoara 2023.

For “Art on the River” curators from the following countries work together: Ger- many, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria. They have selected up to four artists from each of their countries to represent two generations of artists: artists around 50 years and artists around 30 years of age, who grew up before and after the end of the Eastern bloc. The project will show how their art positions diff er. In addition to questions about current art positions in the Danube countries, the project focuses on the tension bet- ween the mostly cosmopolitan position of the artists and existing national ties. By integrating the art scene of eight Danube cities, the project provides a representative cross-section of the art po- sitions of these countries. The exhibition “Art on the River” is intended to arouse curiosity about the artistic neighbourhoods in the Danube region. The project deliberately avoids mysti- fi cation, exoticization or Eastern art clichés. The touring exhibition shows parallels, identities and diff erences and thus provides an open and versatile in- sight into artistic positions across all generations and art forms. The exhibition is accompanied by an elaborate catalogue. The following artists participate in the project “Art on the River”: Birgit Brandis, Jörg Baier, Corinne Chotycki, Bettina Kattinger, Brigida Zuberi, Berenice Pahl, Helena Eribenne, Contact Zone, Rudolf Sikora, Oto Hudec, Flóra Pertics, Sándor Imreh, Péter Somody, Ana Petrović, Vladimir Frelih, Adrienn Újházi, Nikola Džafo, Constantin Flondor, Andrei Rosetti, Ciprian Bodea, Cosmin Fruntes, Sorin Scurtulescu, Silvia Gan- cheva and Yulian Stankulov. The curators of the exhibition are: Franziska Degendorfer (Karlsruhe), Oli- via Jaques (Vienna), Nikolas Bernath (Košice), Prof. Péter Somody (Pécs), Prof. Vladimir Frelih (Osijek), Andrea Palašti (Novi Sad), Sorin Scurtulescu (Timisoara) and Prof. Bozhidar Boyadzhiev (Sofia).
